WHY AKVO

AKVO replicates systemic fluidic networks found in nature: the vascular systems of humans and plants.

 

For instance, our blood vessels supply oxygen and remove waste from our bodies, with our heart acting as a pump. Astonishingly, this biological micro-fluidic system only outputs an average of 1.3 watts in energy but can pump 7 Liters of blood per minute through our entire body. This is thanks to the elegant architecture of vessels, which have evolved over hundreds of millions of years. Inspired by nature’s design, we have constructed our microfluidic system to transport and process water at low energy.

Mission

The world faces a water crisis, with diminishing sources of clean water and increasing demand from industries and urban areas. A rising challenge is the growing presence of micropollutants, dissolved molecules ranging from pesticides to pharmaceutical and cosmetic agents, to hormone-disruptive chemicals. Some of these micropollutants can be toxic to the environment and living bodies even at low concentrations. 

Vission

While WWTPs are not yet required to remove dissolved molecules from treated water, governments & regulatory bodies are currently evaluating solutions before implementing laws.

What is AKVO?

Each AKVO CD core has a diameter of 15 cm and a thickness of 2 mm. One AKVO cartridge is composed of stacked CDs of varying numbers, combined to create a miniaturized factory. For each CD, the hydraulic resistance is about 2000-2500 MPa.s/m3, which is close to the resistance of human systemic vasculature (around 70-160 MPa.s/m3). Thanks to our smart design, AKVO presents high compactness and low-pressure loss which allows having a high-throughput flow rate of more than 2 m3/day, working at less than 0.2 bar with a pile of 20 CDs. So, an AKVO system composed of 10,000 CDs can treat average municipal needs.

How does it work?

Ozonation is known to be one of the most effective at eliminating a broad range of targets. This is thanks to the non-selective oxidation reaction of ozone and hydroxyl radicals (OH˙) with target pollutants. However, hydroxyl radicals are unstable and only have a lifetime of nanoseconds and a diffusion time of milliseconds, meaning they cannot travel large distances. This greatly limits disinfection efficacy. In AKVO, oxidation is miniaturized to the micron scale. The walls of the microfluidic channels are functionalized with photocatalytic agents which produced hydroxyl radicals that can rapidly react with pollutants flowing through the channels. Our microfluidic design creates a microscale confined environment with various advantages:  (1) Acceleration of all reactions for target capture (2) Reduction of thermal and optical losses  (3) Compacity and miniaturization.  Finally, the UV-transparent nature of the material used for AKVO core fabrication, allows UV irradiation to reach all core CDs in a stack.
